Washing Machine Won't Drain: Causes & When to Call a Pro
Opening the washer to find a drum full of water is frustrating — and it can leave your laundry soaked and smelly. Drainage issues are among the most common washing machine problems we repair in Pittsburgh, and the cause is often surprisingly simple.
Check the drain hose first
A kinked, clogged, or improperly positioned drain hose is the number-one cause of a washer that won't drain. Make sure the hose isn't bent behind the machine and that it's not pushed too far down the standpipe.
Clean the drain pump filter
Front-load washers have a small filter (often behind a panel at the bottom front) that traps coins, lint and debris. A clogged filter stops the water from draining. Cleaning it every few months prevents most drainage problems.
Common mechanical causes
- Failed drain pump (you may hear a humming but no draining)
- Broken lid switch or door lock preventing the cycle from completing
- Faulty control board not signaling the pump
- Worn drive belt on older top-load models
