Freezer Not Freezing? Troubleshooting Guide

July 1, 2026 5 min read

A freezer that isn't freezing properly puts hundreds of dollars of food at risk. Before it fully fails, check these common causes — several are easy fixes.

Frost buildup and airflow

Excess frost on the interior or evaporator coils blocks cold air and signals a defrost-system problem. Manually defrosting can help temporarily, but recurring frost needs a professional look at the defrost heater or timer.

Check the seals and placement

Worn door gaskets let warm air in and cold air out. Also make sure the freezer isn't placed next to a heat source and has room for airflow around it.

Mechanical causes

  • Failed evaporator or condenser fan
  • Faulty defrost thermostat, heater or timer
  • Bad start relay or compressor
  • Low refrigerant (requires a licensed technician)
