Microwave Not Working? Common Problems Explained
July 7, 2026 4 min read
Microwaves are one of the most-used kitchen appliances, so a failure is instantly noticeable. The right fix depends on the symptom — here's how to read the signs.
Runs but doesn't heat
If the microwave turns on and the plate spins but food stays cold, the magnetron (the component that generates heat) or its high-voltage diode has likely failed. This is a repair for a qualified technician due to high-voltage components.
Won't turn on at all
- Blown internal fuse
- Faulty door switch (microwaves won't run if the door isn't sensed as closed)
- Bad control board or membrane keypad
Repair or replace?
For built-in and over-the-range microwaves, repair usually makes sense. For inexpensive countertop units, replacement may be cheaper. A quick diagnosis tells you which. PITTSFIX repairs microwaves and all major kitchen appliances across Pittsburgh.
